Sam Whiteman’s maiden Yorkshire century at Headingley overshadowed Joe Root’s near miss in a high-scoring clash with Sussex.
Australian Sam Whiteman has marked a personal milestone with his first century for Yorkshire, achieving it at his birthplace near Headingley while teammate Joe Root fell just short of three figures.
Born in Doncaster, close to the Leeds ground, Whiteman had long aimed to score a hundred for the county.
Resuming on 73 not out against Sussex, he progressed steadily on a flat surface and reached his century from 188 balls, sealing the moment with a straight six off James Coles.
Watched by Root at the other end, Whiteman received congratulations after reaching three figures but was dismissed soon after for 101, caught off the bowling of Henry Crocombe.
That dismissal left Root poised to take centre stage in his first first-class innings since the Ashes 109 days earlier. He appeared set for a century before edging behind for 96, also off Crocombe, falling just short of the milestone.
Despite the near misses, Yorkshire moved past Sussex's imposing 502, posting 511. Australian quick Jhye Richardson contributed an aggressive 35 from No.10 to extend the total.
Richardson then made an early impact with the ball in Sussex's second innings, bowling compatriot Daniel Hughes for a duck after being wicketless in the first innings, where he conceded 131 runs. Sussex closed at 2-31.
Elsewhere, England's Ben Duckett was dismissed for 93 at Trent Bridge, while Nottinghamshire built a lead of 130 runs with six wickets in hand against Warwickshire. Captain Haseeb Hameed made 115, and Beau Webster took 1-14.
Jake Weatherald could not resume on 103 not out for Leicestershire after retiring hurt, as his side reached 5-500 in reply to Glamorgan's 440. Ryan Hadley took 2-90, including Ian Holland's wicket for 79.
At Chester-le-Street, Lancashire strengthened their position against Durham, with Paul Coughlin unbeaten on 100 and Michael Jones adding 72. James Anderson declared at 9-260, but bad light limited his side's push for late wickets.
