Harry Maguire has signed a new one-year contract with Manchester United, with the option of a further 12 months, extending his stay beyond the end of the current season.

The 33-year-old defender, whose previous deal was due to expire this year, has now committed to at least an eighth season at Old Trafford. Since joining from Leicester City for £80m in 2019, then a world-record fee for a defender, Maguire has made 266 appearances and won both the League Cup in 2022-23 and the FA Cup in 2023-24.

Maguire said extending his stay remained a source of pride, describing representing the club as an honour and highlighting his desire to contribute further success alongside the current squad.

His time at United has not been without uncertainty. After losing the captaincy under Erik ten Hag and seeing a proposed move to West Ham United collapse in 2023, his role became less certain.

More recently, he experienced limited opportunities under Ruben Amorim before re-establishing himself under interim manager Michael Carrick. Since Carrick's appointment in January 2026, Maguire has started all 10 matches, signalling a return to regular first-team football.

Director of football Jason Wilcox said Maguire's professionalism, leadership and resilience remained valuable to a developing squad, particularly amid expected changes within the group.

United's decision to retain Maguire reflects both his experience and consistency across multiple managerial regimes. Despite criticism over certain aspects of his game, he has featured 91 times since turning down a move in 2023, underlining his continued importance within the squad.

With his future now secured in the short term, Maguire will aim to build on his recent revival and contribute to United's pursuit of further silverware.
