NSW Waratahs coach Dan McKellar has indicated Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii could return from injury during Super Round, as the side prepares for a key stretch of the Super Rugby season.

Suaalii remains unavailable for the Waratahs' upcoming clash with Moana Pasifika at Allianz Stadium, continuing his recovery from a hamstring tear suffered in early March during a pre-match warm-up.

McKellar suggested the outside centre was close to a return, but the medical staff would ensure all recovery benchmarks were met before clearing him to play.

Super Round, scheduled for April 24 to 26 in Christchurch, presents a potential comeback opportunity, with the Waratahs set to face the Crusaders.

McKellar indicated Suaalii would be considered, provided his rehabilitation continues without setback and he is physically ready to handle the demands of match play.

McKellar acknowledged the player's explosive style places additional strain on his hamstrings and tendons, reinforcing the need for a cautious approach.

He credited the medical team with managing the recovery effectively and suggested Suaalii was progressing well.

The Waratahs will welcome back Angus Scott-Young, Lawson Creighton and Jake Gordon for the match against Moana Pasifika, offering a boost as they look to improve consistency.

Despite Moana Pasifika sitting at the bottom of the standings, McKellar warned they remain a significant challenge. He noted their physicality and previous record against the Waratahs, with NSW having won only once in four meetings.

The coach also pointed to the potential emotional lift for Pasifika following news the club will disband at season's end, describing it as a factor that could further motivate their performance.

NSW's form has been uneven. A narrow 30-28 win over the ACT Brumbies was followed by a heavy loss to the Chiefs, underlining the inconsistency McKellar is aiming to address.

After a bye, he emphasised the importance of mental preparation and sustained performance levels, noting that consistency remains central to the Waratahs' push to become a top-four side.
