Tottenham Hotspur were left clinging to survival hopes after a late equaliser denied them a vital win, despite appearing set to end their long wait for victory.

A superb strike from Xavi Simons had sparked wild celebrations among players and supporters, putting Roberto De Zerbi's side on course for a first Premier League win since 28 December. However, those celebrations proved premature when Georginio Rutter struck deep into stoppage time to earn Brighton a dramatic equaliser.

The result leaves Spurs one point from safety with five matches remaining, and their position could worsen depending on results involving Nottingham Forest and West Ham United.

De Zerbi described the draw as feeling like a defeat but insisted his side must respond, saying the performance showed enough quality to believe survival remains possible. He maintained his squad are capable of winning multiple matches in succession, despite their difficult run.

That run now stands at 15 league games without a win, just one short of the club's longest winless streak, set more than 90 years ago. Spurs have also failed to win their last five league matches in which they have taken the lead, underlining their vulnerability in key moments.

There were, however, signs of progress. Tottenham pressed aggressively throughout, scoring twice from high turnovers, and welcomed back key players including Rodrigo Bentancur and James Maddison.

Former players and pundits were divided over the late celebrations. Some criticised the timing given the remaining minutes, while others viewed the reaction as understandable given the stakes and pressure.

Defender Pedro Porro urged his team-mates to stay positive and focus on the remaining fixtures, with crucial matches ahead against Wolves, Aston Villa and Chelsea.

Despite the setback, De Zerbi emphasised resilience and belief, insisting his players must maintain focus and continue fighting until the end of the season.
