Will Genia believes a Kerevi and Suaalii midfield could give the Wallabies a decisive physical edge at the 2027 World Cup.

WILL GENIA.

Former Wallabies captain Will Genia believes a powerful midfield pairing of Samu Kerevi and Joseph-Aukuso Suaalii could be a major asset for Australia at the 2027 Rugby World Cup, highlighting the growing importance of size and physicality in Test rugby.

Kerevi, currently playing in Japan's Rugby League One with D-Rocks, has not featured for the Wallabies since Australia's 52-20 win over Wales on the 2024 spring tour.

However, Genia said the 32-year-old remains a world-class option capable of making a significant impact if recalled.

Genia pointed to the potential balance of power and skill in a midfield combination alongside Suaalii, suggesting it would give Australia a strong physical edge.

He noted that the modern Test game has shifted towards shorter, more intense passages, where larger and more powerful players can dominate collisions and control momentum.

Referencing leading nations, Genia added that sides such as South Africa and France have thrived by using physicality to gain an advantage, reinforcing his view that size remains a key factor at the highest level.

Despite backing Kerevi's credentials, Genia stressed that any return to the Wallabies should involve a Super Rugby campaign to ensure the required intensity leading into a World Cup.

While acknowledging the quality of Japanese rugby, he said the week-to-week demands of Super Rugby better replicate Test conditions.

Genia also endorsed NSW Waratahs halfback Jake Gordon as Australia's preferred No.9 heading into the home World Cup.

He cited Gordon's consistency and balanced skill set across passing, kicking and running as key strengths, along with his ability to control matches through his kicking game.

Queensland duo Tate McDermott and Kalani Thomas were identified as likely bench options, with Genia favouring their running threats and impact around the ruck.

He also noted Ryan Lonergan's leadership and goalkicking, but indicated Gordon, McDermott and Thomas as the leading trio.
