Jeremiah Nanai’s delayed return from shoulder surgery has likely ruled him out of Origin I, opening the door for new back-row options.
North Queensland forward Jeremiah Nanai has effectively ruled himself out of selection for the State of Origin opener, shifting the focus to Queensland's emerging back-row options.
Nanai featured in all three matches of last year's series, playing a role in the Maroons' comeback victory, but his preparation for 2026 has been disrupted by injury. The 22-year-old missed the opening rounds after undergoing shoulder reconstruction and only returned to action last week in the Cowboys' win over Cronulla.
With Queensland coach Billy Slater expected to name his squad in the coming weeks ahead of the May 27 opener in Sydney, Nanai indicated his priority is regaining form at club level rather than pushing for immediate selection. He said his focus remains on performing consistently for North Queensland following his return.
Nanai's setback stems from a shoulder injury sustained while representing Samoa at last year's Pacific Championships, which required surgery in November. The rehabilitation process kept him sidelined through pre-season and the early part of the NRL campaign.
He acknowledged the frustration of missing the start of the year but described the recovery period as part of the game, emphasising the importance of completing rehabilitation properly before returning to full fitness.
Nanai's likely absence from Game 1 opens the door for other contenders in the Maroons' back row, with selectors now expected to consider alternative options as they finalise their squad.
