Hudson Young’s controversial escape from the sin bin has sparked debate despite the Knights’ comfortable win over Canberra.
The Newcastle Knights' 32-12 win over the Canberra Raiders has been overshadowed by debate around Hudson Young's on-field conduct, after the Raiders forward avoided a sin bin despite a hair-pulling incident.
Midway through the contest, Young grabbed Knights winger Dominic Young by the hair and pulled him to the ground following a breakdown in play.
The moment sparked a brief confrontation between both sides and came while Canberra were already a man down, with Savelio Tamale in the sin bin for impeding a try-scoring opportunity.
Despite expectations that Hudson Young would also be sent for 10 minutes, the referee opted for a penalty only.
The decision divided reaction, with some suggesting the officials showed leniency given the Raiders were already short-handed, while others felt the sanction matched the incident.
The NRL later issued Young a fine for contrary conduct, confirming no further action would be taken. The outcome stood in contrast to a similar flashpoint last season, when Young was sin-binned for an altercation involving Reece Walsh during the finals.
While the Knights secured the result to move to a 4-1 start and climb to second on the ladder, the victory came at a cost.
Centre Bradman Best did not return for the second half due to a groin injury, having shown signs of discomfort throughout the opening 40 minutes. According to NRL Physio Brien Seeney, such injuries can sideline players for between one and six weeks.
Canberra also added to their injury concerns, with winger Xavier Savage leaving the field with an apparent ankle issue and requiring assistance.
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart acknowledged his side's struggles, indicating the team is failing to execute key moments and needs to improve across the full 80 minutes.
He also noted the relative inexperience of the squad and the need for leadership to guide them through a difficult stretch.
