Mitchell Moses says a referee explanation left him unable to challenge a pivotal and controversial moment.
Parramatta Eels captain Mitchell Moses has explained why he chose not to challenge a contentious decision during his side's golden point loss to the Wests Tigers, as debate continues over several key calls in the match.
The flashpoint came when Eels forward Junior Paulo, referred to as Williams in commentary confusion, made a break down the right edge and was brought down just short of the line.
With multiple defenders involved, it was unclear whether the tackle had been completed, and the situation quickly became chaotic.
Paulo attempted to rise and play the ball, but Tigers defenders stripped possession, believing the tackle was still live.
Moses immediately questioned the decision, with many spectators interpreting the moment as either a completed tackle or a potential professional foul.
Referee Peter Gough clarified that he had not called held, meaning the tackle was not complete and play remained active.
Under that interpretation, the Tigers were entitled to contest possession, and Paulo could have attempted to get back over the line.
Moses later said he considered using the captain's challenge but was advised against it after the referee's explanation. He acknowledged that without a held call, the challenge was unlikely to succeed, effectively removing the option.
He also noted the uncertainty facing the ball-carrier, suggesting Paulo may have been penalised for a double movement had he attempted to score after regaining his feet.
Coach Jason Ryles shared that view, indicating any second effort to ground the ball could have been ruled illegal. The pair agreed, however, that the incident was not the decisive factor in the result.
Former playmaker Cooper Cronk, speaking in commentary, supported the referee's interpretation, suggesting the attacker appeared to be trying to promote the ball to score.
Despite that, the decision drew strong reaction, with many questioning whether the sequence fairly reflected the intent of the rules. In a match already defined by tight margins and late drama, the moment added to a growing list of talking points.
