North Queensland are set to secure rising star Jaxon Purdue on a deal through to 2030 after fending off rival interest.
North Queensland are set to secure one of their brightest young talents, with reports indicating Jaxon Purdue has agreed to a long-term extension worth about $3 million.
The 20-year-old's current deal was due to expire at the end of this season, prompting interest from several NRL rivals. Melbourne Storm had been linked earlier before cooling their pursuit, while incoming Perth Bears coach Mal Meninga is understood to be an admirer.
Despite external interest, Purdue has spent recent weeks in talks with the North Queensland Cowboys, making clear his preference to remain in Townsville. According to News Corp, the two parties have now agreed on terms of roughly $750,000 per season through to the end of 2030, with only final details left to be completed. The deal effectively removes Purdue from the open market.
Speculation about a potential switch to the Canterbury Bulldogs was dismissed by his agent Sam Ayoub, who stated there had been no meeting or formal interest from the club. He indicated the reports risked unsettling both the player and the Cowboys while negotiations were ongoing.
Purdue's form has strengthened his value. Shifted to the centres by coach Todd Payten, he produced a two-try performance in last week's win over the St George Illawarra Dragons, part of a three-match winning run that has eased pressure on the coaching staff.
While the positional change initially challenged the Mackay junior, he has adapted quickly. Purdue indicated he is willing to play wherever required, as the Cowboys continue to build momentum ahead of their upcoming clash with the Brisbane Broncos.
