North Queensland coach Todd Payten has confirmed Scott Drinkwater has been granted permission to speak with rival NRL clubs, following the fullback's decisive role in a 35-31 win over Brisbane at Suncorp Stadium on Friday night.

Drinkwater was central to the result, landing a match-winning field goal and repeatedly troubling the Broncos defence. The performance came amid mounting speculation over his future, with St George Illawarra reportedly targeting the 29-year-old despite him being contracted until the end of the 2027 season.

The situation developed after the Cowboys secured Jaxon Purdue on a four-year extension, a move that has strengthened the club's long-term depth at fullback. Payten confirmed reports that Drinkwater is now free to explore options elsewhere and praised his composure during a disruptive week.

Payten said he had been impressed with how Drinkwater handled the attention in the lead-up to his 150th NRL game, noting the fullback's focus and performance reflected his professionalism.

Drinkwater's display is likely to further interest potential suitors. The Dragons' early-season struggles at fullback have intensified links, with pressure building on incumbent Clint Gutherson and the club reportedly keen to strengthen the position.

However, former Cowboys halfback Chad Townsend believes Cronulla could be a more suitable destination. Speaking on SEN Radio, Townsend said Drinkwater would be a strong fit at the Sharks, describing him as an experienced player in some of the best form of his career.

Cronulla recently extended Will Kennedy on a one-year deal through 2026, leaving the door open for future recruitment. The club has also been linked to a significant signing, with several players approaching the end of their contracts.

Expansion side Perth has also been mentioned as a potential contender, with salary cap space available despite the signing of Nick Meaney, who had been viewed as a likely fullback option.

While no move is confirmed, the Cowboys appear open to negotiating if Drinkwater secures a long-term deal elsewhere.
