Latrell Mitchell and Trent Loiero are edging closer to suspension as the countdown to State of Origin intensifies, with both players adding to their charge sheets in Round 6.

Loiero was fined $3000 for a careless high tackle on Taine Tuaupiki during Melbourne Storm's loss to the New Zealand Warriors. It was his third offence, leaving the Queensland forward one charge away from an automatic suspension.

The 25-year-old made his Origin debut for Queensland last year and remains in contention under coach Billy Slater. However, another infringement in the coming weeks would rule him out of the series opener, scheduled in six weeks.

Mitchell faces a similar situation after receiving an $1800 fine for a careless high tackle on Simi Sasagi in South Sydney Rabbitohs' loss to the Canberra Raiders.

It was his second offence, meaning two more charges would trigger a suspension, even at the lowest grading.

That scenario presents a potential concern for New South Wales, with coach Laurie Daley already dealing with injury setbacks.

Stephen Crichton is sidelined with an AC joint injury, while Max King has a fractured jaw and Liam Martin is recovering from a medial ligament issue. Mitchell's form has been strong, placing added importance on his availability.

Elsewhere, Patrick Carrigan faces a two-match ban after a Grade 2 careless high tackle on Tom Chester, with Brisbane Broncos considering a judiciary challenge.

The risk is significant, as an unsuccessful appeal would increase the suspension to three matches.

Brisbane's depth is already under strain, with Reece Walsh, Ben Hunt and Adam Reynolds sidelined, while Aublix Tawha is set for surgery after suffering a fractured eye socket.

Other Round 6 charges included Casey McLean, who accepted a one-match ban, along with Kurt Mann, Jahrome Hughes, Billy Burns, Haumole Olakau'atu, Will Penisini and Samuela Fainu, all of whom were fined for Grade 1 offences.

With Origin selection looming, even minor indiscretions are carrying major consequences.
