A player swap involving Grant Anderson has finalised Mitch Barnett’s move to the Broncos while opening opportunities for Jesse Arthars.
Mitch Barnett's long-anticipated move to the Brisbane Broncos has been finalised, with the New Zealand Warriors securing Grant Anderson as part of the agreement.
Barnett had already agreed to a three-year deal starting in 2027 after being granted an early release on compassionate grounds.
However, Warriors chief executive Cameron George had insisted on fair compensation, leading to a negotiated player swap before the move was signed off.
The Warriors initially explored a deal involving young Bronco Antonio Verhoeven, but Brisbane declined. Attention then shifted to Anderson, who joined the Broncos from Melbourne Storm this season on a two-year contract.
Anderson's time in Brisbane has been limited. He debuted in Round 3 before suffering a grade-three MCL injury the following week, sidelining him until at least Round 14. Despite that, both clubs and the player have now agreed to a three-year deal reportedly worth $1.2 million, with Anderson to join the Warriors from 2027.
The outcome may also benefit off-contract outside back Jesse Arthars, who is now in line for a potential extension with the Broncos. Arthars has regained his place this season after starting out of favour under coach Michael Maguire.
He returned in Round 5 as Anderson's replacement against the Gold Coast Titans and was later shifted to fullback following Reece Walsh's fractured eye socket.
Arthars has since impressed in the role and is set to start again against the Wests Tigers.
Arthars indicated he hopes to remain at the club long term, pointing to his strong connection with teammates. Meanwhile, Warriors coach Andrew Webster welcomed Anderson's arrival, noting he would add depth and competition to the squad alongside former Storm teammate Will Warbrick.
