Laurie Daley has raised Ethan Strange as a surprise Origin option as NSW weigh new combinations.
New South Wales Blues coach Laurie Daley has identified Ethan Strange as a potential bolter for this year's State of Origin opener, pointing to the playmaker's recent form and versatility as key factors ahead of selection.
Daley spoke at Monday's series launch alongside Billy Slater, with captains Isaah Yeo and Cameron Munster also present.
He indicated the Blues squad could feature several fresh faces as they attempt to reclaim the shield from Queensland.
While Yeo and Nathan Cleary are expected to anchor the side, Daley acknowledged strong competition for the halves role.
Mitchell Moses and Jarome Luai remain leading contenders after featuring last year, but Strange has emerged as an outside option following consistent performances for Canberra.
Daley noted that Strange is beginning to produce his best football and referenced his recent display against Melbourne as evidence of his development.
He suggested the 21-year-old is viewed internally as a future Origin player, capable of applying pressure on more established options.
Strange's appeal is strengthened by the introduction of six-man benches for this year's series. Daley said the change allows greater flexibility, particularly in selecting players who can cover multiple roles.
The Raiders playmaker fits that profile, offering coverage across the backline in a similar mould to Matt Burton.
The Blues' forward pack presents a separate challenge, with Payne Haas expected to miss Game 1 due to a knee injury.
Daley acknowledged the need to replace Haas but stressed the squad's depth would be tested rather than relying on a single player.
Options under consideration include Jackson Ford, Addin Fonua-Blake and Lindsay Smith, along with experienced forwards such as Mitch Barnett and Keaon Koloamatangi.
At fullback, Daley indicated a direct contest between incumbent Dylan Edwards and former captain James Tedesco.
He said the decision would come down to form closer to the May 27 opener in Sydney.
