Jarome Luai's unannounced trip to Papua New Guinea has fuelled speculation the Wests Tigers captain could be weighing a high-value move from 2028, with suggestions former halves partner Nathan Cleary might also come into the frame.

Luai was filmed in PNG over the weekend, with reports he met officials from the proposed PNG Chiefs, including general manager Michael Chammas.

He had informed the Tigers he would be out of the country and due back on Monday, according to the original report.

The five-eighth is in year two of a five-year deal worth $1.2 million per season. Crucially, the final three seasons are player options, giving Luai the flexibility to exit early.

The footage has prompted widespread discussion about a potential marquee signing for a future PNG franchise, particularly given the prospect of tax-free earnings.

Former Penrith Panthers playmaker Greg Alexander told SEN Radio that Luai's visit suggested genuine interest rather than a casual trip.

Alexander noted Luai's decorated career, which includes four premierships, State of Origin success and Test appearances for Samoa, and said a lucrative offer late in his career could be difficult to ignore.

He added that any deal would likely exceed Luai's current salary and could shape the remainder of his playing years.

The situation has also sparked discussion around Cleary, who has not yet extended his contract with Penrith beyond 2027. Both he and coach Ivan Cleary are off contract at that point, with the club keen to retain them.

While a reunion in PNG remains speculative, the link reflects their successful partnership during Penrith's four consecutive premierships. The club currently sits atop the 2026 NRL ladder, strengthening the case for continuity.

According to Brent Read on Fox Sports, those close to Cleary expect him to assess his market value from November 1, when he becomes eligible to negotiate.

The indication is that any exploration would be strategic rather than a clear signal of departure, though interest from a well-funded PNG venture is considered likely.
