Jarome Luai's reported interest in joining Papua New Guinea's incoming NRL franchise has prompted concern about its potential impact on the Wests Tigers' squad stability.
The Tigers captain met PNG officials in Port Moresby on Sunday and is widely tipped to become the new club's marquee signing ahead of its planned entry into the competition in 2028. Luai holds player options in his current deal for 2027, 2028 and 2029, allowing him flexibility over his future.
Financial incentives could play a significant role. Players who sign with the PNG side are expected to benefit from tax concessions, with Luai reportedly able to earn the equivalent of $2 million per season under those arrangements.
Queensland coach Billy Slater raised concerns about the timing of the speculation, suggesting it could disrupt a Tigers side enjoying one of its strongest starts in recent seasons. Under coach Benji Marshall, the club has won five of its first eight matches and sits third on the ladder.
Slater indicated that uncertainty around a captain's future can affect team cohesion, particularly when a side is building momentum. He noted that while player movement is part of the professional game, prolonged public discussion could create distractions.
NRL journalist Brent Read also highlighted the broader implications for the Tigers' roster, pointing to Luai's influence within the playing group. He suggested that teammates may be tempted to follow if the five-eighth commits to the PNG project, particularly those off contract in the near term.
Read identified players such as Sunia Turuva and brothers Terrell and Taylan May as examples of individuals who could be drawn to the opportunity, though no decisions have been confirmed. He added that the situation may shape how other Tigers players assess their own futures.
