Derbyshire fought back late on day one against Lancashire, with Shoaib Bashir claiming career-best domestic figures of 4 for 76 at Emirates Old Trafford.

Lancashire were dismissed for 351 after a strong middle-order effort led by Marcus Harris, who made 125, and Josh Bohannon, who contributed 73. The pair shared a 146-run stand for the third wicket, steadying the innings after an early wobble.

The home side had slipped to two early wickets inside the opening five overs, with Luke Wells and Harry Singh both dismissed cheaply. However, Bohannon and Harris rebuilt patiently, guiding Lancashire to 88 for two at lunch before accelerating in the afternoon session.

Both batters reached half-centuries in quick succession, with Harris eventually converting his innings into a century off 153 balls. His knock included 12 fours and a six, anchoring Lancashire's progress as they moved into a commanding position.

The momentum shifted after tea. Bashir, who joined Derbyshire in January, sparked a collapse with a decisive spell of 10-1-27-3, removing Bohannon and triggering a series of wickets. He later added two more, including Tom Hartley and Tom Bailey, as Lancashire lost their last seven wickets for 99 runs.

Ben Aitchison provided strong support with 3 for 57, including the key dismissal of Harris, who edged to slip after a 95-run fourth-wicket stand with Michael Jones.

Derbyshire's reply began late in the day but suffered an immediate setback when Caleb Jewell was dismissed for a duck off the final ball, leaving the visitors 0 for 1 at stumps, still trailing by 351 runs.

Despite the late wicket, Derbyshire will take encouragement from Bashir's breakthrough performance, which ensured the match remains evenly poised after a day that initially belonged to Lancashire.
