Derbyshire’s bowlers sparked a dramatic Lancashire collapse to leave the match finely poised heading into the final day.
Derbyshire seized control on a dramatic third day against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford, putting themselves in a strong position to chase a long-awaited victory.
After replying to Lancashire's first-innings 351 with a disciplined 374, Derbyshire secured a 23-run lead, built on key contributions from Brooke Guest (83) and Martin Andersson (54). Their efforts were supported by three consecutive partnerships of over 50, anchoring the visitors' innings.
Lancashire's bowlers fought back late, led by debutant Paul Coughlin, who impressed with 4 for 79, including a sharp spell that removed the lower order and limited Derbyshire's lead.
The hosts' second innings then collapsed spectacularly under relentless pressure. Veteran seamer Mohammad Abbas struck twice in quick succession, while Zak Chappell ripped through the middle order with three wickets in eight balls, reducing Lancashire to 23 for 5.
Amid the chaos, Marcus Harris stood firm, producing a composed unbeaten 58 to stabilise the innings. He found support first from Tom Hartley, who made 24 in a 55-run stand, and later from Coughlin, who remained unbeaten on 35.
Earlier in the day, rain interruptions limited play, but James Anderson made an early breakthrough with a superb delivery to dismiss Andersson, ending a crucial 110-run partnership with Guest.
Lancashire's lower-order recovery, highlighted by an unbroken 69-run stand between Harris and Coughlin, lifted them to 147 for 6 at stumps, extending their overall lead to 124 runs.
With four wickets still in hand, Lancashire will aim to stretch that advantage further on the final day, though Derbyshire remain well placed and could be set a manageable target of around 170 as they chase a first Championship win at Old Trafford in nearly three decades.
