Australian Test opener Jake Weatherald will return to South Australia for the upcoming Sheffield Shield season, ending a three-year stint with Tasmania after being granted an early release from his contract.

Weatherald, who still had two years remaining on his deal, was allowed to leave in order to reunite with his family in Adelaide. His wife had remained in South Australia during his time in Tasmania, a factor that ultimately influenced the move.

In a statement, Weatherald acknowledged the role Cricket Tasmania played in his development, noting the support of coach Jeff Vaughan and high-performance staff.

He said the environment helped him elevate his game and contributed to his progression to Test level.

The 30-year-old recently made his Test debut during the Ashes series, where he showed early promise but finished with an average of 22.33 across five matches.

Despite that return, he has retained national selectors' confidence, earning a Cricket Australia contract earlier this year.

South Australia, fresh off back-to-back Sheffield Shield titles, gains an experienced top-order batter in what shapes as a significant addition. Weatherald's return strengthens their batting depth and provides leadership at the top of the order.

His departure has disappointed Tasmania supporters, particularly after a prolific 2024/25 Shield campaign in which he scored more than 900 runs.

The move nonetheless reflects a balance between personal circumstances and professional opportunity.

Weatherald has spent the off-season in county cricket, where he has recently found form. After scores of 83 against Sussex and 96 against Surrey, he broke through for his maiden county century with 104 from 116 balls.

Those performances offer timely momentum as he looks to secure his place in Australia's Test side ahead of upcoming series against Bangladesh and South Africa, and with an eye on the next Ashes campaign.
