De Zerbi has apologised to Tottenham fans amid backlash over his past comments on Greenwood.
Roberto De Zerbi has apologised to Tottenham Hotspur supporters following criticism over past comments about Mason Greenwood, insisting he would never downplay violence against women.
The Italian, appointed as Spurs manager on Tuesday, faced opposition from several fan groups in the lead-up to his arrival. Concerns centred on remarks he made while coaching Marseille, where he described Greenwood as a "good guy" and suggested the forward had "paid dearly" for past events.
Greenwood had been charged in October 2022 with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault after images and videos circulated online. The charges were dropped in February 2023 due to the withdrawal of key witnesses and a lack of realistic prospect of conviction.
Speaking in his first interview as Tottenham manager, De Zerbi said he wanted to be clear about his position. He stated he had never intended to minimise violence against women or any form of abuse, and maintained that throughout his life he had supported vulnerable people and taken a firm stance on such issues.
He apologised to anyone offended by his previous comments, adding that as a father he is particularly sensitive to the subject. De Zerbi said he hoped supporters would come to understand that his earlier remarks were not intended to take a broader position on the issue.
Fan groups including Proud Lilywhites, Women of the Lane and Spurs Reach had publicly opposed his appointment, while the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust said it held serious concerns.
On the pitch, De Zerbi inherits a side in a difficult position. Spurs sit 17th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone, following the dismissal of interim coach Igor Tudor.
Despite the uncertainty, De Zerbi confirmed his long-term commitment, stating he had signed a five-year contract and would remain in charge next season regardless of the club's division. He expressed confidence in the squad, emphasising the need to rebuild belief and make the most of the players' quality.
