Double bagel defeat sparks Medvedev meltdown

Daniil Medvedev’s shock 6-0 6-0 loss to Matteo Berrettini was overshadowed by a frustrated on-court outburst.

Daniil Medvedev endured one of the toughest defeats of his career at the Monte Carlo Masters, falling 6-0 6-0 to Matteo Berrettini in under 50 minutes.

The one-sided loss saw Medvedev win just 17 points and marked the first time in his 12-year professional career that he failed to win a single game in a match. It also represented a rare milestone in men's tennis, with Berrettini becoming the first player in a decade to defeat a top-10 opponent without conceding a game.

Frustration quickly spilled over. After losing the opening set and dropping serve early in the second, Medvedev reacted angrily, repeatedly smashing his racket against the court and surrounding fence. The outburst lasted several moments, with the racket eventually left broken beyond use.

Commentator Mikey Perera noted the force and repetition of the incident during the broadcast, while Medvedev was later seen discarding the damaged racket courtside. The umpire issued a code violation for the conduct, in line with tournament rules.

The Russian, who won the US Open in 2021, has built a reputation as one of the sport's most consistent performers, but this defeat highlighted a difficult day both technically and emotionally. Berrettini, a former Wimbledon finalist, maintained control throughout, closing out the match without allowing any shift in momentum.

Reaction after the match centred largely on Medvedev's behaviour rather than the result itself. Two-time Grand Slam doubles champion Jamie Murray suggested the outburst was out of character for elite competition and indicated Medvedev would likely reflect on the incident with some regret.

The loss adds to a challenging period for Medvedev, whose temperament has occasionally come under scrutiny, including a similar episode during last year's US Open.
