Ollie Watkins is determined to force his way into England's World Cup squad as the Aston Villa striker looks to finish a difficult season on a high.

The 30-year-old has endured one of the toughest campaigns of his career and was notably left out of the final training camp before Thomas Tuchel names his squad for the tournament.

However, Watkins responded in style, scoring twice in Villa's 3-1 first-leg win over Bologna in the Europa League quarter-final, reigniting his push for international selection under Unai Emery.

Speaking to the BBC, Watkins made clear his ambition to be on the plane this summer.

"We've got a massive tournament coming up, and I'm doing everything I can to be there," he said. "I just want to keep scoring, finish the season strongly, and hopefully earn a place in the squad."

Despite his recent impact, Watkins admitted he has struggled for consistency, with his brace taking him to 12 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions this season.

He described the campaign as the most challenging period of his career, especially after reaching new heights last year and gaining greater attention following his performances at Euro 2024.

"This has probably been the toughest season I've had," he said. "When you reach a certain level, expectations rise. After the Euros, there are more eyes on you, and I haven't quite hit the level I wanted this year. Learning to deal with that has been difficult."

Watkins has leaned on his support network during the downturn and revealed he sought advice from former England striker Michael Owen.

"I messaged him and we had a chat," Watkins said. "He told me that when I play with a bit of anger and become a nuisance to defenders, that's when I'm at my best. I've tried to bring that into my game."

With the season entering its final stretch, Watkins remains focused on rediscovering top form and proving he deserves a place on football's biggest stage.
