Michael Carrick says Kobbie Mainoo’s new deal is close, but Champions League qualification could be key to securing Manchester United’s future.
Michael Carrick says progress is being made on securing Kobbie Mainoo's long-term future at Manchester United, but admits Champions League qualification could prove crucial in convincing players to commit to the club.
Mainoo, a product of United's academy, has rediscovered his best form under Carrick after a difficult spell during Ruben Amorim's tenure. The midfielder is now viewed as a key figure in the club's future.
Although his current deal runs until 2027, with an option for a further year, United are reportedly preparing a new five-year contract for the England international. Carrick remains optimistic that an agreement is close.
"We'd like to think so, and it's getting closer," Carrick said. "We're calm about it, but positive. At the moment, we're in a good place."
United's push for a top finish in the league could play a decisive role. Carrick's side face Leeds United in a crucial clash, knowing a win would strengthen their grip on third place and move them further ahead of Aston Villa in the race for Champions League qualification.
Carrick acknowledged that competing in Europe's elite competition has wide-reaching benefits beyond results on the pitch.
"The Champions League brings so many positives. It's where we want to be," he said. "It affects everything - players staying, players joining, and the financial side of the club. We need to be there consistently."
United previously missed out on qualification after losing the Europa League final under Amorim, which forced the club to consider alternative transfer strategies.
While Carrick did not go into detail about current planning, he confirmed that preparations are underway behind the scenes, with director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada working on strengthening the squad.
"There's always planning going on for the summer," Carrick said. "Where you finish in the league makes a big difference financially, and that impacts what you can do moving forward."
With Champions League qualification within reach and Mainoo's contract talks progressing, United appear to be building momentum both on and off the pitch.
