Carlos Alcaraz has cast significant doubt over his French Open title defence after revealing a concerning wrist injury that has disrupted his clay-court preparations.

The 22-year-old Spaniard, a seven-time Grand Slam champion, made the admission in Madrid ahead of receiving the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year award, where he was recognised after a dominant 2025 season that included ATP Tour-leading success and major titles at Roland Garros and the US Open.

Alcaraz's 2025 campaign saw him finish the year as world No.1, before being overtaken recently by rival Jannik Sinner.

He then began 2026 by completing a career Grand Slam with victory at the Australian Open, securing his seventh major singles crown.

However, his momentum has stalled due to a wrist issue that worsened during his opening match at the Barcelona Open.

He withdrew from his second-round match and later pulled out of the Madrid Open after medical assessments suggested the injury was more serious than first believed.

His participation in the upcoming Italian Open remains uncertain, while his French Open defence, due to begin in less than a month, is now under a cloud as he awaits further scan results.

"We'll have to wait and see," Alcaraz said in Madrid, adding that the next medical test would be crucial and that he and his team were doing everything possible to ensure a positive outcome.

He stressed that his long-term career is the priority, even if that means missing key tournaments.

Alcaraz said he would prefer to return fully fit rather than rush back and risk further damage, noting the importance of protecting his career over immediate competition.

The development has left fans concerned and could open the door for Sinner at Roland Garros, where the Italian lost a five-set final to Alcaraz in 2025 before reclaiming world No.1 after a recent Monte Carlo victory.
