Tate McDermott is facing a race against time to be fit for the Wallabies' opening Test of 2026, after revealing ongoing complications from a serious hamstring injury have delayed his return.

The Queensland scrumhalf, who has 50 caps, had been expected to push for selection in Australia's Nations Championship clash with Ireland at Allianz Stadium on July 4. However, his recovery from the injury sustained against New Zealand in Auckland last September has proven slower than anticipated.

McDermott said the rehabilitation process had included multiple setbacks, particularly following surgery to reattach the hamstring.

He explained that the muscle had not responded as expected during recovery, although he now feels he is making progress.

The 26-year-old has returned to team training with the Reds but remains uncertain about a firm comeback date.

He is targeting a return before the end of the Super Rugby Pacific regular season, with five matches still to play before the finals series, which concludes on June 20.

Queensland currently sit sixth and are preparing to host the fifth-placed Brumbies this weekend, following a narrow golden-point loss to the Blues, sealed by Beauden Barrett.

McDermott said the injury had forced him to relearn basic movement patterns after surgery, including running mechanics.

He noted that managing the surrounding muscle groups had been a key challenge during a six-month rehabilitation period, describing it as unfamiliar territory after previously avoiding significant injuries.

His halves partner, Tom Lynagh, has also endured an interrupted season due to a series of setbacks, including a calf issue that has limited him to just one Super Rugby appearance this year.

McDermott indicated both players were close to returning, with hopes they can regain form ahead of the international window.

With the Wallabies' first Test approaching, McDermott's fitness remains a key watch for selectors.
