Will Kennedy’s standout form is forcing Cronulla to reconsider the fullback’s future as injuries hit both sides.
Will Kennedy's strong start to the NRL season is placing pressure on the Cronulla Sharks to reconsider the fullback's long-term future, after another standout display in their 36-22 win over the Warriors.
Kennedy scored twice and played a key role in attack, finishing with a try assist, two line breaks, six tackle busts and 154 running metres.
His performance helped drive Cronulla to their third win in five games, alongside halves Nicho Hynes and Brayden Trindall.
Despite his form, Kennedy remains off contract beyond this season, with the club having only extended him on a one-year deal for 2026.
His recent performances are now strengthening the case for a longer commitment, particularly given his influence in an attack ranked among the competition's most productive.
The match at Shark Park was tempered by injuries on both sides. Cronulla centre Jesse Ramien is expected to miss between one and two months after leaving the field with what the club described as a potentially high-grade knee injury, likely involving the medial collateral ligament.
The Warriors also suffered setbacks, with Luke Metcalf facing another stint on the sidelines after a hamstring issue in just his second game back from a long-term ACL injury.
Coach Andrew Webster indicated the playmaker believed the latest problem was less severe than previous injuries, although he would miss upcoming matches.
Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad was also forced from the field after a heavy tackle but passed his head injury assessment. Webster later clarified the issue as a jarred neck rather than a concussion.
Amid the disruptions, Kennedy's consistency has emerged as a key positive for Cronulla. At 28, he remains central to the Sharks' attacking structure, and with rival clubs monitoring the situation, the coming months may prove decisive in determining whether he stays at Shark Park.
