Ben Hunt’s effort to play through a serious knee injury has underscored Brisbane’s growing injury concerns.
Brisbane Broncos coach Michael Maguire has praised Ben Hunt after the veteran played through a serious knee injury during the club's win over the Gold Coast Titans, as the side deals with a mounting injury toll ahead of round six.
Hunt suffered the injury before half-time but returned after the break with his knee strapped, finishing the match despite clear discomfort.
Scans later confirmed a grade three medial ligament tear, an injury expected to sideline him for up to eight weeks.
Maguire said the extent of the damage was not immediately known during the match, noting the performance highlighted Hunt's commitment to his teammates.
He added that playing through such a significant injury reflected the value the player places on the club and those around him.
The Broncos' 14-point win came at a cost. Captain Adam Reynolds was forced from the field early with a groin strain, while fullback Reece Walsh suffered a fractured cheekbone that required surgery.
Walsh is expected to miss between four and six weeks, continuing a run of similar injuries.
Reynolds had pushed to prove his fitness at training but was officially ruled out on Tuesday, leaving Brisbane without three key playmakers for Friday night's clash with the North Queensland Cowboys.
The absences present a selection challenge for Maguire, who is set to field a reshuffled spine. Former Cowboys halfback Tom Duffy is in line to replace Reynolds and face his old club, while Jesse Arthars is the leading option at fullback after filling the role against the Titans.
Hayze Perham remains another fullback option, and winger Josiah Karapani is set for a recall after missing last week. Young hooker Blake Mozer is also expected to step onto the bench in Hunt's absence.
With three senior players unavailable, Brisbane's depth will be tested as they attempt to maintain momentum despite a growing casualty list.
