Winless St George Illawarra are weighing a potential move for former fullback Matt Dufty as they continue to search for answers at the back, with pressure mounting ahead of a crucial clash with Manly.

Tyrell Sloan has been recalled at fullback for Friday night's match in Wollongong, replacing injured captain Clint Gutherson.

However, his hold on the role appears uncertain once Gutherson returns, with the club still assessing its long-term options in a position that has become increasingly demanding as the game speeds up.

The Dragons have already explored the market, including an unsuccessful attempt to recruit Trai Fuller from the Dolphins. Dufty has now emerged as a possible alternative, offering attacking spark as the side looks to break its winless start.

The 30-year-old has impressed in the NSW Cup with South Sydney, scoring four tries and setting up four more in four matches.

His defensive output, historically a concern, has also been steady this season, with seven missed tackles and an efficiency rate of 73 per cent.

Dufty returned to Australia this year after a four-season stint with Warrington in the Super League. He is currently on a NSW Cup deal with the Rabbitohs and has expressed a desire to extend his NRL career, having played 94 games to date.

His pathway back to the top grade at South Sydney appears limited, with Jye Gray and Latrell Mitchell ahead in the pecking order. That could open the door for a rival club if interest develops.

Dragons coach Shane Flanagan said the club is still working through its recruitment strategy ahead of the June 30 deadline but stopped short of confirming whether a fullback signing is a priority.

For now, the focus remains on immediate results, with Friday night's home fixture shaping as a key test for both the team and its under-pressure coach.
