Bennett’s Dufty move hints at Mitchell centre role

South Sydney coach Wayne Bennett has moved to bring former St George Illawarra fullback Matt Dufty into the club's top 30 squad, a step that may signal Latrell Mitchell will remain in the centres as the Rabbitohs manage a growing injury list.

The issue has been forced by the loss of Jye Gray, who suffered a shoulder injury in the first half of the side's NRL defeat to Canberra. Reports indicate Gray is expected to miss around four weeks with an AC joint problem, disrupting a backline that had been a key factor in South Sydney's strong start to the 2026 season.

Gray's absence saw Mitchell shift to fullback during the match, where he delivered an uneven performance. While he has experience in the role, many observers consider him more effective at centre, where he can focus on attacking impact alongside Cody Walker on the left edge.

In response, the Rabbitohs have sought NRL approval to elevate Dufty into their 30-man squad ahead of their clash with the last-placed Dragons. Under league rules, such a move requires an exemption, typically granted only when a club can demonstrate a lack of depth due to injuries.

Dufty, 30, has not played in the NRL since 2022 but returned from the Super League this year to feature in South Sydney's NSW Cup side. His recent form has been strong, including a three-try performance against the Bulldogs and another standout display against the Eels.

This is the second time this season South Sydney have applied for an exemption. A similar request was made before Round 1 to promote Ashton Ward following injuries and suspension issues in the squad.

If the application is denied, Bennett still has alternatives. Mitchell could remain at fullback, with Campbell Graham shifting to centre and Edward Kosi or Moala Graham-Taufa filling a wing role. However, the club appears keen to preserve its current balance, which has seen Mitchell produce five tries in four games while operating at centre.
