Ben Hunt has moved to end speculation over his NRL future, informing the Brisbane Broncos he intends to play on in 2027, a decision that could reshape the club's hooking depth.

The 36-year-old had been widely tipped to retire alongside captain Adam Reynolds at the end of the season. Instead, Hunt is targeting a 19th campaign, which would move him closer to the 400-game milestone.

Broncos coach Michael Maguire indicated a contract extension is likely, noting Hunt's ongoing passion for the game and commitment to training and match performance. He said the veteran remained driven and eager to continue while that motivation remained strong.

While Hunt's call strengthens Brisbane's experience in the spine, it complicates the outlook for off-contract hooker Billy Walters. The 32-year-old is still recovering from a torn ACL suffered during last year's finals series and is not expected back until the latter part of the season, limiting his chances to press his case for a new deal.

The Broncos already have significant depth at dummy half. Cory Paix recently secured a two-year extension through to the end of 2028, while emerging talent Blake Mozer is contracted until 2027. Youngster Cameron Bukowski is also pushing for a top-30 promotion after impressing on a development deal.

Bukowski is set to debut this weekend against the Tigers in Campbelltown, earning his opportunity amid an injury-hit roster that has sidelined Brisbane's senior hookers.

Hunt's presence would offer continuity and leadership as the club prepares for further change. Payne Haas is set to depart for South Sydney, while Reynolds is expected to retire at season's end, creating both a leadership gap and salary cap space.

With Jonah Pezet also due to arrive next season, Hunt's experience could prove valuable in guiding Brisbane's next generation. However, his decision to extend his career may come at the cost of Walters' future at the club.
