Kalyn Ponga has committed his long-term future to the Newcastle Knights, signing an extension that keeps him at the club until at least the end of 2030 and effectively ends speculation around a potential move or code switch.

The Knights captain had been off contract at the end of 2027 and linked with rival NRL clubs and rugby union. His new deal includes player options for the 2031 and 2032 seasons, positioning the 28-year-old to spend his entire prime, and likely his career, in Newcastle after joining in 2018.

Coach Justin Holbrook described the extension as significant, pointing to Ponga's leadership and influence within the squad as central to the club's long-term plans.

In a parallel development, the St George Illawarra Dragons have confirmed the signing of Scott Drinkwater from the North Queensland Cowboys on a three-year deal starting in 2027. The agreement, reportedly worth about $3 million, adds an experienced playmaker to the Dragons' rebuild.

Chief executive Tim Watsford said Drinkwater's composure and attacking instincts would strengthen the squad, while the fullback indicated he was motivated by the club's emerging young talent and long-term direction. He becomes the second major 2027 recruit alongside Keaon Koloamatangi.

Drinkwater's departure has prompted North Queensland to secure Tom Chester on a new deal through to the end of 2029. The extension follows a recent long-term commitment to Jaxon Purdue, as the Cowboys reshape their backline for the future.

Elsewhere, the Dolphins have extended Selwyn Cobbo on a one-year deal for 2027. The move provides short-term stability while leaving open the possibility of further interest, including from incoming expansion side the PNG Chiefs ahead of the 2028 season.
