Paul Gallen has supported calls to select James Tedesco ahead of Dylan Edwards at fullback for NSW in this year's State of Origin series, as debate continues over one of the Blues' key positions.

Blues coach Laurie Daley has indicated the No.1 jersey is a direct contest between incumbent Edwards and the experienced Tedesco, with both players producing strong club form in the opening rounds.

Edwards appeared to strengthen his case with a standout performance against Newcastle, scoring a hat-trick inside 20 minutes. The Penrith fullback now has nine tries and four try assists from eight matches, underlining his impact in attack.

Tedesco, however, has also impressed for the Roosters, recording 10 try involvements across seven games, including four tries. Andrew Johns described his form as close to career-best, highlighting his passing game as a key point of difference, particularly in creating opportunities for teammates.

Gallen echoed that view, suggesting Tedesco's broader skill set could better suit NSW's approach. He pointed to previous Origin campaigns where the Blues attempted to mirror Penrith's club style, arguing that strategy had not consistently delivered results at representative level.

He indicated that selecting Tedesco could offer a different attacking structure, while acknowledging Edwards' form and contribution. The decision is expected to be one of the defining calls as Daley finalises his squad for the opening match.

With both contenders in strong form, the selection battle highlights the depth available to NSW as they prepare for the upcoming series.
