Ben Hunt says PNG’s prime minister personally pitched Broncos players as the new franchise ramps up recruitment.
Ben Hunt has revealed Papua New Guinea's recruitment push for its incoming NRL franchise began well before Jarome Luai's signing, with the country's prime minister personally targeting Brisbane players during a visit last year.
Hunt said he, Adam Reynolds and Ezra Mam were approached by Prime Minister James Marape during the Broncos' premiership trophy tour in Port Moresby following their grand final win. He indicated Marape promoted the financial benefits of joining the PNG-based Chiefs, including tax-free contracts, and even floated a future coaching role for Reynolds.
The approach highlights the scale of the recruitment drive ahead of the club's entry into the NRL in 2028. Luai's confirmed move has intensified interest, with South Sydney winger Alex Johnston also expected to join, and other players reportedly considering their options.
Hunt suggested the level of interest from players is not unusual, noting that contract discussions and movement speculation are a routine part of the game. He added that players often weigh opportunities as they arise, particularly when new teams enter the competition.
Reynolds has since confirmed he will retire at the end of the 2026 season, while Hunt indicated he hopes to continue playing beyond that, leaving open the possibility of future opportunities.
Meanwhile, Penrith captain Isaah Yeo acknowledged the broader implications of the new franchise, with a number of Panthers players coming off contract in the coming years. He said players must balance professional opportunities with personal considerations, including family commitments, when assessing their next deals.
With the Chiefs preparing for their inaugural season, the combination of financial incentives and a fresh market is expected to shape player movement across the NRL in the coming seasons.
