AJ Brimson's State of Origin prospects have shifted sharply over the past year, with two rule changes now placing the Gold Coast utility back in contention for a Queensland recall.

Twelve months ago, Brimson's decision to switch his international allegiance from Australia to England, ahead of the Ashes series, would have ruled him out of Origin under previous eligibility rules. However, recent changes now allow players representing England or New Zealand to feature in Origin, provided they meet residency requirements from before their 13th birthday.

As Brimson satisfies that criterion, his earlier exclusion has effectively been overturned. The 27-year-old, who has played four Origin matches and was part of Queensland's series wins in 2020 and 2023, is again in the selection frame after a three-year absence.

Competition for backline positions remains strong, with players such as Reece Walsh, Kalyn Ponga and Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow established in the Maroons setup. However, a second rule change may further strengthen Brimson's case.

The introduction of a six-man interchange bench for Origin increases the value of versatile players. Brimson's ability to cover multiple roles, including fullback, centre, halves and dummy-half, positions him as a potential utility option within Billy Slater's squad.

The expanded bench is expected to influence selection strategies, with teams likely to favour adaptable players capable of covering injuries or tactical shifts during matches. In that context, Brimson's flexibility could prove decisive.

Kalyn Ponga, despite switching his international allegiance to New Zealand, also remains eligible for Queensland under the updated rules. Selection decisions for the Maroons are expected to reflect a balance between specialist roles and versatility as the squad is finalised.
