Monte Carlo Masters delivered one of its most dramatic days as Daniil Medvedev suffered a rare and heavy defeat, capped by a visible on-court outburst.

Medvedev was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Matteo Berrettini in just 49 minutes on Wednesday, marking the first double-bagel loss of his professional career. The result also carried broader significance, becoming only the fifth instance of a top-10 player losing by that scoreline since ATP rankings began in 1973, and the first in a decade.

The Russian's frustration was evident early in the second set. After falling 2-0 behind, he smashed his racquet repeatedly before discarding it, drawing a reaction from the crowd. He ended the match with 28 unforced errors and five double faults, a sharp contrast to his recent strong form on the US hard courts.

For Berrettini, the victory represented a major highlight following an injury-interrupted period. The former Wimbledon finalist described the performance as one of the best of his career, underlining his return to form on clay.

Elsewhere, the tournament draw shifted significantly. Fourth seed Lorenzo Musetti was eliminated in straight sets by wildcard Valentin Vacherot, a result that reshapes the path for Alex de Minaur. The Australian had been projected to face Musetti in a potential quarter-final rematch of last year's semi-final.

De Minaur must first navigate a last-16 clash with Alexander Blockx, who arrives with momentum after defeating Flavio Cobolli in straight sets on his 21st birthday.

In other matches, Alexander Zverev staged a comeback from a double break down in the deciding set to defeat Cristian Garin and progress. He will next meet Zizou Bergs, who advanced with a convincing win over Andrey Rublev.

Rising Brazilian Joao Fonseca also continued his rapid development, becoming the youngest player to reach the last 16 at this level since Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet achieved the feat 21 years ago. He now faces Berrettini in the next round.
