Matt Fitzpatrick birdied the first play-off hole to defeat Scottie Scheffler and claim his second PGA Tour win in a month.
Matt Fitzpatrick edged out world number one Scottie Scheffler in a dramatic play-off to win the RBC Heritage in South Carolina.
The 31-year-old appeared set to secure victory in regulation but bogeyed the 18th hole after a poor chip, allowing Scheffler to draw level. However, Fitzpatrick responded immediately on the first play-off hole, producing a superb approach before calmly sinking a birdie putt to seal the title.
It marks his second PGA Tour win in the space of a month, following his triumph at the Valspar Championship in March, and continues an impressive run of form that also includes a runner-up finish at The Players Championship.
Fitzpatrick had started the final round with a three-shot lead and looked in control for much of the day, playing his opening 17 holes in two under par without dropping a shot. But Scheffler mounted a late charge, narrowing the gap to one stroke by the time they reached the 18th tee.
Both players failed to reach the green in two on the final hole. Scheffler recovered well to save par and complete a four-under 67, while Fitzpatrick's mistake forced a play-off.
The Englishman, however, showed composure under pressure, delivering when it mattered most to secure the win.
"It means everything to do it again," Fitzpatrick said after his victory. "To go head-to-head with Scottie and come through in a play-off is really special."
For Scheffler, the result marks a second consecutive runner-up finish after his near miss at the Masters, where he finished behind Rory McIlroy.
"I gave it a good fight," Scheffler said. "Every time he needed something, he delivered. He deserved it."
South Korea's Kim Si-woo finished third on 16 under par after a final-round 68, two shots behind the leading pair.
