John Hawkes began his career in Adelaide in the early 1970's with his first Group 1 win coming with a top class filly Toltrice in the 1972 VRC Oaks.
John Hawkes then moved to Melbourne to train for Jack and Bob Ingham in 1989 before taking over as head trainer at Crown Lodge at Warwick Farm in Sydney in 1993.
Training many champions of the Australian turf such as Octagonal and Lonhro, Hawkes won an impressive nine Sydney Trainers' Premierships, his first coming in 1993/94.
in 2004 John Hawkes was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall Of Fame along with Jack and Bob Ingham.
In 2007 with over 3000 career winners, Hawkes left Crown lodge and in 2008 went into a training partnership with his sons Michael and Wayne at Rosehill and Flemington.
